Survivors were trying to force their way inside the vault, with no effect. Around a 1000 registered dwellers made it to the vault before it being closed, the remaining citizens were forced to survive on their own in the city, soon covered by radioactive ash and stricken with lack of supplies. At hour 9:51 AM first bombs began to strike Alaska, and that pretty much collided with Vault 47's doors being sealed. On October 23rd, 2077, DEFCON level raised to 1 and a country-wide evacuation order has been given. Vault was equipped with a single GECK to be used for repopulation. The vault was one of several control vaults, where no particular experiment was performed, with the only order received being to open 50 years after sealing.

The construction of the vault was a part of the plan of building a series of fallout shelters for United States' citizens with the help of Vault-Tec, and this particular one has been built between 2064-2066, with July 5th, 2066, being a day of its official establishment.
